In many areas of the US safety concerns have limited Halloween activities for children. In the Blueberry Hill area of Hanover, where I live, we are fortunate that the neighborhood still feels safe enough for parents to encourage their children to go house to house in the time honored way. And it seems to be an event that is anticipated eagerly by both adults and children.
As I walk the dog in the morning I often meet Mike, who lives down the road and has a 7 year old. This morning he said to me “Ready for the big night?” It seems as important to him as it must to his son, Connor.
My normal pattern is to go to the Hanover Coop for candy about a week before Halloween. But the more encounters I have with people like Mike in advance of the big night, the weaker I get, until on the actual day of Halloween I’m back at the store doubling my stock of candies. Now I’m ready! I’ll let you know how many children actually turn up! Jane Darrach
